Thomas was a pioneering abstract painter whose luminous, mosaic-like works broke new ground for Black artists in America.
She was the first-ever graduate from Howard University’s art department in 1924. For 35 years she taught public school and didn’t begin painting full-time until she was almost 70 years old.
Thomas crafted her signature "Alma Stripes" style later in life, drawing inspiration from her garden and her interest in scientific advancements, particularly space exploration.
Thomas’s paintings were an instant hit. In 1972, she became the first Black woman to open a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum.
In 2015, the Obama administration acquired her painting Resurrection (1966), making her the first African American woman represented in the White House Collection.
